The route
Three galleries, 528 steps
The dome climb is included in a standard sightseeing ticket, but it is not for everyone. The route is one-way and narrow in places, with a handrail for most of the way. There is no lift to the Whispering Gallery.
- The galleries are reached by stairs only — there is no lift.
- The stairwell is narrow and one-way in places.
- A few short stretches of the stairwell are narrow and enclosed — brief, but worth knowing about if you're prone to claustrophobia.
- Those with mobility difficulties, heart or breathing conditions, or a fear of heights should not attempt the climb.
- High winds or maintenance can close the galleries at short notice.

Plan your climb
When to go and what to bring
Timing
The galleries usually open at 09:30 and close at 16:15. Arrive before 14:30 if you want to climb in comfort, especially on weekends and school holidays.
Footwear
Wear flat, closed-toe shoes with good grip. The stone stairs are worn smooth in places and can be slippery.
Fitness
The climb is the equivalent of a steep 30-storey building. Anyone with mobility, heart, breathing or balance concerns should skip it.
Book tickets
The dome is included in sightseeing admission
You do not need a separate dome ticket. A standard sightseeing ticket covers the cathedral floor, crypt and dome galleries when they are open.
